What COVID testing is required to go to the US and coming back to Canada? How much do the tests cost?

At the moment all travellers, regardless of vaccination status, will still require a pre-departure/pre-entry COVID-19 molecular negative test result. For entry to Canada the test must be performed within 72hrs of the scheduled departure time of their flight and for entry to the US the test must be performed no more than 3 calendar days before their flight departs. This applies for all travellers 5 years of age or older coming back into Canada and all travellers age 2yrs or older entering the US by air.

Costs for testing in Canada before departure to US are approx $200 CAD at select pharmacies and select clinics in every city. Effective August 9, 2021, the Government of Canada is adjusting its post-arrival testing strategy for fully vaccinated travellers. Using a new border testing surveillance program at airports and land border crossings, fully vaccinated travellers will not need a post-arrival test unless they have been randomly selected to complete a Day 1 COVID-19 molecular test. There are no changes to the mandatory testing requirements for unvaccinated travellers. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html

Costs for testing in the US before departure to Canada ranges from USD $65 to $125 for a COVID PCR test. The travel test for international travel is the most expensive at $125 per test. There are many locations for testing such as pharmacies and health care outlets. Important to ensure the testing service generates a test result with all the info required by Canada. i.e name, DOB, type of test, location of and provider of test etc. It is essential to ensure the test is for international travel and not the test that is performed for traveling to Hawaii which is different.

What is the app that I need to download and complete before I come back to Canada?

In addition to receiving a full series of a vaccine authorized by the Government of Canada, fully vaccinated travellers must also: provide COVID-19-related information electronically through ArriveCAN (app or web portal) including proof of vaccination prior to arrival in Canada; meet the pre-entry testing requirements; be asymptomatic upon arrival; and have a paper or digital copy of their vaccination documentation in English or French (or certified translation) ready to show a government official on request as evidence.

All travelers must use the government’s ArriveCAN portal to submit their information. If they meet the government’s criteria, they will not have to quarantine upon arrival in Canada: Use ArriveCAN: Submit travel information to enter Canada – Canada.ca

Kids under 12 and cannot be vaccinated, can they get into the US and do they quarantine when they get there and back to Canada?

Officials announced that as of Aug. 9, children under 12 — who aren’t yet approved to receive a vaccine — will be exempt from the quarantine requirement after entering Canada and can move around with their parents if they follow public health measures. But those children are advised to avoid group settings such as school, camps and daycares — especially indoor ones
